Mexico's third-largest city, capital of the state of Nuevo León, is situated in an 1,767-foot valley in the Sierra Madre Oriental. Monterrey is flanked by the 7,809-foot Cerro de la Mitra (Mitra Peak) to the west and the distinctive 5,703-foot Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Peak)-the city's emblem-to the east.
Monterrey is the country's major industrial center and some of Mexico's most important companies are based here. It is also a big college town with several universities, among them the prestigious Monterrey Technological Institute, the MIT of Mexico.
